Marketing High Technology

Marketing High Technology Companies
William Davidow

Davidow's book is quite interesting — it demonstrates, in layman's terms, that while "great devices are invented in the laboratory, great products are invented in the Marketing Department." Here, an experienced practitioner from a first-rate high-tech company tells the "inside truth" about the ingredients required for marketing success. And it's an easy read, because it says everything so well and convincingly.

In particular, his discussion of the cost of entering a well-established competitor's market should be required reading for all marketing managers and chief executives. This book is definitely worth your investment in time.

PR and Media Relations

Public relations provides companies with an opportunity to present their story, in a controlled manner, emphasizing specific aspects that need to be highlighted to their intended audiences. But telling a story in a way that is sufficiently compelling to attract the attention of writers and editors requires a kind of expertise that goes beyond standard business writing.

Communication in the digital era is really about participating in a conversation, not simply broadcasting a message. The way in which companies communicate has changed dramatically as a result of technology, disintermediation, and globalization. We've moved away from linear (create, publish, consume) communication to a mode in which content can be created, shared and consumed by virtually anyone, over an extended period of time. One advantage of this shift has been that it provides a constant feedback loop, which provides enormous value for those companies shrewed enough to listen and adapt. For example, social media-enabled press releases present essential news information in a way that allows reporters and bloggers to navigate, share and link the news, enabling your story to become an integral part of other stories. At O&Y, we publish releases in a web-friendly HTML format that supports hyperlinks, RSS feeds, and Search Engine Optimization, ensuring that they can be easily integrated into this new information paradigm.

Every day, communication is becoming even faster, more frequent, more fragmented. Content has to be not just interesting, but interactive, as well. In this kind of environment, responsiveness and adaptability are absolutely crucial to success. And while the divisions between our "business" and "social" environments are becoming blurred, there are still some constants: the ability to understand exactly what it is that the journalist, blogger, or consumer really needs; the need for compelling content; the importance of speed and proactivity; and, most importantly, the alignment of communications objectives with business goals.

Product Marketing

Product Marketing for Technology Companies
Mark Butje

Born in the Netherlands, Butje has held marketing positions with Apple, Wang, Castel, and Brodeur Europe, before becoming an independant tech marketing consultant. This book coves a wide range of tech marketing topics, including selecting target markets; creating positioning statements; writing financial paragraphs; motivating others; and outlines how to act as a bridge between sales, development and finance.

It describes how to focus on the whole product and create solutions that match real market needs. Certainly worth a read, especially for those new to technology product marketing.
