Four Steps to the Epiphany

The Four Steps to the Epiphany
Stephen Gary Blank

I first learned of this book from a VC, and decided to check it out, based on her suggestion. For folks who've never been involved in a start-up or early-stage company, this book should prove to be an eye-opener. Blank provides clear-headed insight into what can typically go wrong in early-stage, high-tech ventures, along with some sound suggestions as to how to fix those problems. This book is culled from Blank's notes for his business school classes, so it's perhaps not as polished as it might be, but as a veteran of a couple of start-ups, I found the information contained within it to be accurate and very useful.

The Business of Software

The Business of Software
Michael A. Cusumano

Cusumano, a professor at MIT's Sloan School, emphasizes the need for software companies and solutions providers to be able to quickly adapt to rapidly-changing markets. This is a very good read, and it describes characteristics of different business models, evaluates strengths and weaknesses, and shows how each is more or less appropriate for different stages in the evolution of a company, as well as through different economic climates. There's also an interesting analysis of ten start-ups that have met with varying degrees of success.
